Smoke and Tobacco Products
Sacramento State is a Smoke and Tobacco-Free campus, in alignment with all California State University (CSU) campuses. This policy applies to all students, staff,
faculty, and guests.
Smoking, vaping, and the use or possession of any tobacco or smoking-related products or devices are not permitted anywhere in University Housing, including
the residence halls (rooms, suites, hallways, stairwells, breezeways) and surrounding campus grounds. This includes but not limited to: Cigarettes, cigars,
cigarillos, vapes and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), including THC or nicotine cartridges, marijuana or cannabis (smoked, vaped, or burned in any form),
pre-rolls, pipes, bowls, or blunts, hookahs (fully or partially assembled), heating or lighting of hookah coals, rolling papers, blunt wraps, or other paraphernalia.
Smoking is defined as inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying a lighted cigarette, cigar, blunt, pre/self-rolled marijuana, pipe, hookah, vape or other smoking
apparatus. Residents are responsible for informing guests of this policy and ensuring compliance. Violations by guests may result in disciplinary action for the
hosting resident or the resident(s) whom room or suite the violation took place.
There are no designated smoking or vaping areas on campus. All smoking, vaping, and cannabis use must occur off-campus, beyond the boundaries of university
property. Please refer to the campus map online to identify university property where smoking is prohibited.
Smoking can cause extensive visible and non-visible damage. Therefore, students will be held responsible for any damage, odor, or extra cleaning caused by
smoking or vaping tobacco, cannabis, or similar substances in or around University Housing Facilities. This includes: Persistent odor of smoke, marijuana within
the space, or vapor, residue, persistent odor or discoloration of furniture, mattresses, or walls. Students found responsible shall incur costs related to deep
cleaning, repainting, carpet replacement, air filter replacement, and/or odor remediation. In addition to damage charges, the loss of housing privileges and
University student conduct referrals may apply.
Toy Weapons, Explosives, or Firearms
Law enforcement can mistake toy weapons, toy explosives, or toy firearms for the real thing, and situations involving the use of toy replicas can be determined
to be a severe threat to the safety of those involved and bystanders. Considering the welfare of the entire residence hall community, all such toy weapons are
strictly prohibited.
Permitted & Prohibited Pets
University Housing Services only permits non-carnivorous fish in a properly maintained tank (up to 10 gallons) in the residence halls. Fish must be cared for in
a sanitary and responsible manner. Only one tank per resident shall be permitted. Residents should be mindful of break periods and planned and unforeseen
electrical outages, which will shut down aquarium pumps and equipment. Residents may not “pet-share” or keep pets for others, even on a temporary basis.
If UHS identifies additional cleaning and/or pest control is necessary due to poor conditions in an aquarium or living space caused by an allowable pet or a
prohibited pet/animal, the resident will be charged for cleaning and pest control.
What is a non-carnivorous fish? A peaceful, plant-eating or flake-food eating fish that do not pose a risk to others in the tank or the living environment.
Examples include: Goldfish, Tetras, Guppies, Mollies, and Betta fish (if housed alone).
Note: This includes exotic pets such as Tarantulas, scorpions, stick insects, or any species not classified as non-carnivore’s fish.
